Woman accused of shoplifting

DONEGAL TWP — A repeat shoplifter is behind bars on charges that she swiped 100 cigarette lighters from a store.

Brittany D. Williams, 28, of Oakland Township is charged with a felony count of retail theft.

State police said surveillance video at the Dollar General store on Route 68 in Donegal Township caught a woman placing two 50-count trays of BIC lighters, totaling $162.50, in her purse.

She also allegedly put a tray of Wing Torch lighters, valued at $36, in the purse. The suspect drove away in a pickup truck.

Troopers allegedly used the truck's license plate to identify Williams. On Wednesday, police spoke to her by telephone. She admitted to being in the store Tuesday with her mother.

Later Wednesday, District Judge Lewis Stoughton arraigned the defendant on the felony retail theft charge. She has two prior shoplifting convictions, police said.

In Pennsylvania, retail theft is upgraded to a third-degree felony — regardless of the stolen property's value — when a suspect has at least two prior convictions for the same crime.

Stoughton set bond at $10,000 and ordered a number of conditions for her release, including that she immediately be placed on pretrial supervision.

Additionally, Williams is prohibited from using alcohol or drugs, and she must be drug tested every Monday and Friday.
