BUTLER TWP — Artwork done by Butler High School students will be auctioned Saturday at the 14th annual Fine Arts and Beyond (FAB) Showcase. Money raised will go to the Golden Tornado Scholastic Foundation.
Paintings, photographs, sculptures, drawings and other pieces of art by students will be on display in the school. The pieces will be sold in a silent auction.
Foundation President Ed Fink said each piece will have a minimum bid amount and during the event attendees can submit bids, in $5 increments, into a container. The winner of each piece will be announced toward the end of the night. In some cases the student's family is the winning bidder, Fink said.
“People go just for the artwork. It's amazing what our high school students can produce,” foundation board member Lisa Konesni said.
The event also usually includes demonstrations from teachers, displays detailing projects done by elementary students, and musical performances by student ensembles.
“It's really a very nice to showcase the talents of our students,” she said.
A panel of seven judges, which includes board members, art teachers and other community members, will judge the art and award first, second, third and three honorable mention awards in several different categories.
The event will also feature a 50/50 drawing, and 17 baskets will be raffled off. Each school in the district contributed one basket, while the foundation's board and other groups also donated baskets.
The baskets are on display in the lobby of Butler Memorial Hospital until Friday. Community members who can't make it to the showcase can stop at the hospital at any time to buy tickets and also enter the 50/50. Last year's drawing raised $8,000, with the winner taking home $4,000.
The showcase is the main annual fundraiser for the scholastic foundation, which supports scholarships for students and grants for teachers, Fink said. The foundation's board is also hoping to donate technology to be used by district students in the future, said Fink.
“It's so important in our students' lives moving forward,” he said about including technology.
What the foundation donates each year depends on how much money it raises and what needs district administrators say they have, he said.
The foundation in recent years has held two other fundraisers during the year. In a campaign called “the buck stops here,” the foundation asks district employees to deduct a $2 donation out of their paycheck. And for the past three years, an event called Turkey Bingo has been held where community members play 11 games of bingo and turkeys are given out as prizes.
Events for this year's FAB Showcase will run from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Intermediate High School, 551 Fairground Hill Road. Admission is free.
