Scoop on the rebound

I think I’m getting air back under my wings.

After a rough Week Zero (yes, Mike Kilroy, it’s Week Zero), I bounced back to go a respectable 8-3 in Week 1 to raise my record to 13-7 on the young season.

I only lost 14 games all of last year, so I better be perfect this week.

On to the picks:

Butler at Mt. Lebanon — The Golden Tornado have something special in sophomore quarterback Cooper Baxter. He can run and he’s a legitimate passing threat, the first Butler has had in several years.

But Mt. Lebo has big-play ability and could make it a long night for the Tornado. Mt. Lebo 39-19.

Seneca Valley at Canon-McMillan — The Raiders have a problem few thought the Raiders would have.

Scoring.

Seneca Valley has found the end zone just three times in the first two games and its rush offense is also struggling.

Canon-McMillan’s defense is suspect, so this could be the week Seneca Valley gets rolling. Seneca Valley 31-17.

Greensburg Salem at Mars — The Planets gave up 36 unanswered points last week to Moon. That won’t happen again. Mars 31-12.

Beaver at Knoch — The Knights defense came up with two huge fourth-quarter stops last week to preserve a one-point lead and a win against Blackhawk.

Knoch won’t have as much drama in this win. Knoch 26-10.

North Catholic at Freeport — A true Week 2 game for both teams with quarterbacks who like to sling the rock all around the yard.

Freeport’s Garret Shaffhauser threw for 276 in a loss last week. He’s going to be throwing a lot again this week. North Catholic 35-21.

Karns City at Clarion — This is an epic early season matchup. Epic.

As much as I want to pick Karns City in this one, it’s hard to go against Clarion at home with the studs they have on offense. KC will make it interesting, though. Clarion 28-23.

Ridgway at Moniteau — Something is amiss in Cherry Township. The Warriors just aren’t playing well right now. Ridgway 25-17.

Franklin at Slippery Rock — The Rockets are coming off a disappointing road loss at Reynolds in a game they led in the fourth quarter.

This week, they battle Franklin and its star quarterback Ian Haynes, who is getting Division I looks. Slippery Rock, though, will bounce back. Slippery Rock 29-20.

Curwensville at Union/A-C Valley — The Falcon Knights need to get their running game going if they want to win this one. Curwensville 18-14.

Washington at Summit Academy — It doesn’t get any easier for the Knights. Washington 43-8.

Scoop is looking to be 10-0 this week.
