Candidates finalized for primary
Most countywide officeholders in Butler County appear to be shoo-ins for re-election, according to the unofficial candidate list for the May 21 primary released Tuesday evening by the Butler County Bureau of Elections.
The 2019 deadline for candidates to file nominating petitions passed at 5 p.m. with no apparent surprises.
County Commissioners Kevin Boozel, Kim Geyer and Leslie Osche have no primary challengers. The same goes for District Attorney Richard Goldinger, Recorder of Deeds Michele Mustello, Register of Wills/Clerk of Orphans Court Sarah Edwards and Treasurer Diane Marburger.
Barring any write-in candidacies, they also seem to have a clear path in the fall election.
But there will be two countywide races in the primary: for Common Pleas Court judge and prothonotary.
A seat on the county bench became vacant after Judge Marilyn Horan was confirmed in September as a judge on the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania.
County judicial candidates in the primary are Matthew Fischer, William Robinson, Terri Schultz, Nicole Thurner and Jennifer Gilliland Vanasdale.
The pending retirement of incumbent Glenna Walters has attracted three candidates for prothonotary: Kelly Ferrari and Paula Painter, who are both running for the Republican nomination, and Daniel Smith Jr., who is running for the Democratic nomination.
There are two seats on the ballot for Butler City Council. Republican Councilman Michael Walter is seeking re-election while Democratic Councilman Corey Roch is not.
Other candidates for city council are Travis Uhl, who is seeking the GOP nomination and Bob Dandoy who is seeking the Democratic nomination.
Some of the other competitive races include:
In Adams Township, Supervisors Russell Ford and Thomas Franceschina will have challengers for two Republican nominations. The other candidates are Thomas Dover, Ian Floyd, Frank Haustovich and Clay Morrow.
In Center Township, Supervisors Robert Sloan and Alan Smallwood will be challenged by Don Pringle for a pair of GOP nominations.
Concord Township Supervisor Thomas Manuel will have two GOP challengers: Dave Hazlet and Timothy Vogel.
Connoquenessing Township Supervisor Ray Kroll Sr. will also have a pair of GOP opponents, Ricky Kradel and Mark Scott.
In Lancaster Township, Supervisor Dennis Kerr is being challenged by three other Republicans: Richard Marcotte, Debbie Scott and Tim Zinkham.
