Most area runners associate the Cratty name with road racing, but it’s usually Herb or Bonnie of Miles of Smiles Timing Service, not Natasha.

Natasha Cratty, sister-in law of Herb, is race director of this Sunday’s second annual Prospect Chiefs 5k Run/Walk in Prospect at 9 a.m. The approximately ¼ mile kids race follows at 10 a.m. The event is a fundraiser for the club’s football program, providing uniforms, equipment and scholarships for boys and girls ages 7 through 12 who wish to participate.

Not being a runner, Natasha says that when the board of the football program decided to hold a 5k, she turned to Herb and Miles of Smiles for assistance in all aspects of race planning. Herb laid out and measured the course, an out-and-back of rolling hills which ends on the grounds of Prospect Girls and Boys Club.

Herb also times the race and organizes the awards ceremony with overall and age group awards. The race offers an overall first place prize and age group awards from ages 14 and under, 15-19, and in 10-year increments through 60-plus. There will also be overall awards for first finishers of the kids race.

Last year, 52 runners and walkers completed the race. Carter MacMurdo of Ellwood City was the first male finisher with a time of 19:11 while Butler’s Jennifer Bole finished first among women in 21:18.

Prospect Chiefs offer participants post-race refreshments of fruit, drinks and hot dogs. There will also be an opportunity to further support the group’s fundraising efforts by purchasing raffle tickets for a $1,500 gift card prize.

Local parents may also sign kids up for the fall football program. The football program, conducted through ABC League, is open to all kids from the Slippery Rock school district and any adjacent district which does not offer ABC football.

Prospect Chiefs 5k offers college students a $3 discount off the $25 registration fee. Natasha says that it’s good for the younger kids to see the college students giving back to the community. Many participants in the football program and their families will be on hand on Sunday to help with the race. Kids who are not running will be at the finish line cheering.

Prospect Boys and Girls Club has offered community sports programs (soccer, football, cheerleading, baseball and softball) for more than 40 years. Club President Roy Longdon says that some former participants are now in their 50s.

Natasha Cratty emphasizes the importance of teaching kids to be part of their community and to be thankful for support for their club. “We’re a small community with very generous sponsors who make this possible for our kids,” she says.

“We stress to the kids to always be thankful, whether it’s for gifts of popsicles or pizza after practice, or race sponsors who keep the program affordable.”
