BUTLER TWP — A small basement fire caused damage to a house on Whitestown Road Monday night, in what township Fire Marshal Larry Christy called a “juvenile fire-setter” incident.

Fire departments were called to a two-story house on the 100-block of the road around 9:40 p.m. for a report of a house on fire.

The family who lives there was home when the fire broke out and was able to get out safely and call 911.

Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire using only an extinguisher, said Capt. Joe Ladue, of Butler Township Volunteer Fire District Station 3.

However, the house had filled with smoke and crews remained on scene for more than an hour to clear the house using fans.

Christy said the fire caused $2,000 to $3,000 in damage to the home, and the structure's utilities remained shut off today because of damage caused to some electrical wiring. The fire apparently was started with a cigarette lighter and some “paper towel-type material” in the basement, Christy said. It was contained to a couple guitar cases and a dresser by a water line that broke after the fire began, Christy said. He said no charges were expected to be filed in the incident.

Station 3 was assisted at the scene by crews from South Butler, Mercer Road, the township police and Butler EMS.
