Incumbents keep school board seats
All of the incumbents running for school board in Butler retained their seats Tuesday night, and two newcomers earned seats at the table.
Jennifer Cummings, the board's vice chairwoman, won re-election, as did incumbents Mary Waggoner and Bill Halle. Newcomers Jennifer Daniels-Wells and Tom Harrison also won election.
Eva Robinson, another wouldbe newcomer to the board and the only candidate running with only a Democratic nomination, was not elected.
Daniels-Wells watched results come in along with other candidates that she campaigned alongside. She, Cummings and Waggoner watched together, and outgoing board President Nina Teff joined, she said.
“I'm really excited about being a voice for kids in the district and families,” Daniels-Wells said. “That's been my main goal for this process, and that would be where my passions lie.”
Harrison, who left a career as an editor for the Butler Eagle earlier this year as he pursues life as a preacher, said he was eager to serve.
“After being in a career for close to 40 years where I had been critical of political community leaders, I suddenly find myself in a position where I can try it for myself,” Harrison said. “It's humbling.”
Harrison arrived on Tuesday's ballot via a committee decision, not the primary in May.
Suzie Bradick originally won the Republican nomination for the spot on the ballot Harrison filled. Bradrick withdrew from the race, hoping the Republican committee would put Teff on the ballot in her place. Teff did not make it through the primary.
Harrison was added to the ballot instead, after Halle advocated for Harrison and against Teff at the committee meeting.
Harrison and Halle both appeared on the ballots as Republicans only. Waggoner, Cummings and Daniels-Wells all ran with both major parties' nominations. Robinson ran as a Democrat.
All five winners are set to serve four-year terms that begin in the new year.
According to unofficial figures available Tuesday night:
- Cummings won the most votes with 7,299
- Waggoner got 7,121
- Harrison got 7,012
- Daniels-Wells got 6,956
- Halle got 6,917
- Robinson got 4,642.
