Trail addition underway in Adams Twp.
ADAMS TWP — A trail is under construction in part of the township's community space, according to supervisor Darryl Brandon.
The trail is on the former West property, south of the existing township park and west of Aiken and Taylor Ridge lanes.
“The goal is to provide access to that property,” Brandon said Monday.
Once the trail is completed, Brandon said, the public will be able to reach it through the current park community trail system. He estimated the addition adds about a 1.5-mile loop to the park trails.
Brandon also said the new trail is close to the Wygal property, which lays the groundwork for future connectivity.
On Friday, the township closed on the 102-acre property along Hutchman Road as part of a long-term effort to add the land to the township's 164-acre community park.
Brandon said having a bigger workforce available to deal with winter weather has helped the township make progress on the new trail.
“It's been a great time to actually do the construction,” Brandon said. “It makes it much easier.”
Brandon said the terrain on the West property is “pretty rugged.” The trail will make it better for walking.
Russell Ford, supervisor chairman, praised supervisor Edward Vogel for lending the township equipment for the project. Vogel donated a bulldozer. “The cost to cut this trail a year ago was over $100,000,” Ford said. “Using our own manpower, it might be somewhere around $10,000.”
Ford said the township was “very, very fortunate” to be making progress on the trail at this time.
Brandon also updated the public on ongoing work for a trail ordinance.
The township has established a committee to develop guidelines and standards for trail development. “All trails in our community are going to be able to basically commit to the same standards for health and safety,” Brandon said.
The process includes input from the township solicitor and engineer. Brandon said the committee would like to have an ordinance drafted within a few weeks.
