Police stun driver after chase and resisting arrest
State police say they had to Taser a 68-year-old Cabot man following an early Sunday morning vehicle pursuit in Butler.
The defendant, Joseph H. McKain, later offered arresting officers a possible explanation for his actions: he didn't want to get another ticket.
He ended up getting more than a ticket.
District Judge Lewis Stoughton arraigned McKain on misdemeanor charges of fleeing or attempting to elude police, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest and flight to avoid apprehension or prosecution.
He also is charged with four traffic violations: failing to yield to an emergency vehicle, disregarding traffic lanes, careless driving and reckless driving.
Police said they initially tried to stop McKain for erratic driving about 1:45 a.m. in the area of Route 8 in the city.
A trooper activated his emergency lights and siren, according to court documents, but the defendant failed to stop his 2018 Toyota Tacoma.
The officer chased after McKain, who traveled down North Main Street hill and turned onto West Pearl Street.
The defendant eventually stopped on North Jackson Street, documents said, when he apparently noticed more police cars joining the pursuit. But he refused to get out of his pickup truck
Police said two troopers moved in and removed him but he continued to resist. One of the troopers deployed his Taser, and McKain was placed in handcuffs.
He acknowledged that he saw the cruiser's flashing lights behind him, according to a police affidavit, but said he “did not want to get another ticket.”
McKain also told troopers that he “did not know why he didn't stop,” the affidavit said.
