Brewers nip Bucs late

MILWAUKEE — Pinch-hitter Orlando Arcia drilled a run-scoring single to left with two outs in the eighth inning, giving the Milwaukee Brewers a 6-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates Monday night at Miller Park.

Arcia’s hit came against Pittsburgh reliever Chris Stratton and scored Ben Gamel, who doubled to lead off the inning.

Jose Osuna’s two-out, two-run single knotted the game at 5 in the Pirates’ sixth inning. Erik Gonzalez drilled a two-run homer for the Bucs in the third to tie the game at 2.

Trevor Williams was the Pirates’ starting pitcher, but labored after retiring Milwaukee in order in the first inning. Williams managed to work only four innings, striking out six, but throwing 89 pitches.

The veteran right-hander continues to struggle this season with a 1-5 record and earned run average well above 5.00.

The Brewers did not name a starting pitcher until earlier in the day. Brent Suter, normally in the bullpen, got the call and pitched three innings, striking out three.

Milwaukee (16-18) took three out of four in the wrap-around weekend series. The Pirates (10-22) and Brewers split the season series with five wins each.
