New Butler mayor, city council sworn in

Bob Dandoy takes the oath as the new Mayor of the city of Butler on Monday. Following the swearing in, Dandoy spoke of needing to work together as a community to continue to improve the city. Those in attendance included state representative Marci Mustello, state senator Scott Hutchinson, all three Butler County commissioners and other representatives from the city and Butler Township.

Bob Dandoy was sworn in Monday morning as mayor of the city of Butler, and Larry Christy and Donald Shearer were sworn in as new members of the City Council.

Dandoy, a lifelong Butler resident and retired teacher, thanked the city employees, his governmental constituents and anyone who has contributed to the betterment of Butler.

He said the potential of the city lies within the people working hard to improve it.

“Every positive interaction between our city representatives and anyone who lives, works or recreates within our city borders improves the quality of life and increases our chances of continued success,” Dandoy said. “I promise I will bring those qualities to my work, and I expect no less from everyone who represents this city in any way.”Dandoy's election to mayor means that the council must appoint someone to fill the remainder of his term as a council member. The city is accepting letters of interest for the vacant position until Feb. 9.Dandoy said letters can be directed to him, and he noted the council is looking for someone “with a background in finance.”

The city's council members also accepted assignments for different departments. Councilman Mike Walter was appointed as director of accounts and finance, Shearer was appointed director of parks and public property and Christy was appointed director of public safety and the bureau of fire. The council also appointed Barbara Hall to the position of city controller for a term running through January 2024.Dandoy said Hall has served in the position for the past two years, but did not run for the position again in the last election. Because no one else ran for the position in 2022, Hall offered to serve again, according to Dandoy.

“She has done an exemplary job, and we're happy to have her on board,” Dandoy said. The council also approved liaison appointments for each member. Dandoy will be liaison for the Butler Area Public Library, Butler Downtown and the Rotary Arts District.Walter will be liaison for the Butler Area Sewer Authority, Butler County/Connoquenessing Creek Flood Control Authority, the Parks, Recreation and Public Property, and the Bicycle Advisory Commission.Christy will be liaison for the Building and Zoning, the Zoning Hearing Board and the Code Management Appeals Board.Shearer will be liaison for the Redevelopment Authority, the City Shade Tree Commission and the Butler Area Multi-Municipal Plan Oversight Committee.
