'Cinderella' with a twist
The youth and teenagers of Sing Hosanna! will present a rare midweek musical June 24 and 25 at the Succop Theater at Butler County Community College.
“Twinderella — The Musical” by Charlie Lovett and Bill Fancoeur will begin at 7:30 p.m. both days.
“'Twinderella — The Musical' is a delightful twist on Cinderella and the surprise announcement about her twin brother, Bob,” said director Ralph Christy Jr. about the latest Sing Hosanna! offering featuring a cast of actors ages 7 to 17.
“The young cast is having a blast with the dialogue, the music and the choreography,” Christy said.
He believes this to be one of the most enjoyable children's shows in which he's been involved.
“As a director and teacher, it is thrilling to see the kids take to the show, the direction, learning about theater and theater skills and the friendships they are making,” he said.
Playing the infamous Bob, twin of Cinderella, is Christian Cendrowski of Saxonburg.
“He is a character that just wants to be loved and cared about since he lives with his cruel stepfather and stepbrothers,” Christian said of his role.
The 16-year-old rising junior at Knoch High School has been in several Sing Hosanna! productions.
In this show, he is one of the older actors and he doesn't take that responsibility lightly. “I'm learning to mentor younger actors in this show,” he said of his experience.
His twin, Cinderella, is being played by Nicole Ambrose of Winfield Township.
The 14-year-old will be a sophomore at Knoch High School in the fall.
“Like my character, I'd like to think that I can stand up for myself in times of need,” Nicole said.
“Cinderella eventually takes a stand to follow her dreams rather than be a doormat to her stepmother and stepsisters,” she added.
Nicole said she brings her wittiness to the character. “I bring in my own personality a little when Cinderella gets sarcastic or sassy towards another character because I act with that same strong and playful attitude towards my friends a lot,” she said of her personal style.
The role runs the gamut of emotions she has found. “I am learning how to accurately show these emotions with a convincing personality. I take into account a lot of advice from the director and my friends, and I am learning to improve my abilities with their help,” she said.
This show will be her first lead role, and she was both shocked and delighted when she landed it, she said.
Princess Petunia, played by Leah Harris of Muddy Creek Township, “is a tomboyish, love struck girl,” she said.
Leah, 11, just finished fifth grade at Moraine Elementary School.
She said she could relate a lot to the character, because she is very similar.
“Cinderella and her twin brother, Bob, are hard at work all day until their families are invited to a baseball game and a royal ball. With the help of their fairy Godmother and Godfather, they meet the love of their lives,” Leah said.
She last played the role of Flossie in the Sing Hosanna! production of “Give My Regards to Broadway” last summer.
