Sing Hosanna! will bring 'Dreamcoat' to BC3 stage

Alexandra Patterson, left, is the Narrator and Tyler Pollock plays the title role in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” at the Succop Theater.

Sing Hosanna! is celebrating its 40th year by staging “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” as its spring offering.

The musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice will run April 12, 13 and 14 at the Succop Theater at Butler County Community College.

This isn't the first-time director Ralph Christy Jr. has undertaken the production. “We did the show in 2000 and 2009. This year it features a cast of 60, ages 7 through the senior years,” said Christy.

“No one from the first show is reprising a role, but about 10 to 15 actors will be joining this production from the 2009 show,” he added.

Donning the Dreamcoat is Tyler Pollock of Chicora.

“Joseph is the favorite of his father Jacob, and often lets his 11 brothers know that's the case. He comes off as stuck up to his brothers, but truly means no harm,” Pollock said.

“He has a big heart and the ability to interpret dreams, which he does ... to help people throughout the show,” he explained.

The meaty role presents some difficulties that will need to be overcome. “The vocals of Joseph are difficult and have challenged me as a singer since day one. His songs, however, are very powerful and are worth the struggle,” said Pollock, who added that the ensemble number, “Jacob and Sons” is his favorite.

“Although my solo part for the specific song is a small one, the entire number is a special one, easy to enjoy,” he said.

Michael Traverso of Lancaster Township will be portraying Pharaoh, the King of Egypt, along with Simeon, one of Joseph's brothers.

“(The role of) Pharaoh calls for an Elvis impression,” said Traverso of one of the nuances of the role.

“'Song of the King,' which has a cool 1950s Rock and has a cool 1950s Rock and Roll theme, is one of my favorite songs in the show,” he said.

To prepare, Traverso has channeled his inner Elvis. “I sang along to a lot of Elvis songs, from 'Can't Help Falling in Love' to 'Hound Dog' practicing my impression for the Pharaoh,” he explained.

Simeon is a bit easier to play, he said. “I can pull from being a brother myself. I have two younger brothers, and growing up, we all got on each other's nerves every now and then,” he said.

Playing Potiphar as well as another of Joseph's brothers is Matt Nocera of Butler. Wearing different hats or sandals can be tricky.

“It can be a challenge switching roles from character to character and transitioning between the numbers,” Nocera said, noting his method of preparation is all about focus.

“I have to prepare myself to be continuously focused on the current song and what is up next. I have to go over in my mind the order of the numbers in the show several times because I am involved with most of them,” he explained.

The narrator who tells the story and takes the audience along on the adventure is being played by Alexandra Patterson of Jefferson Township.

“I like to think of her as the pseudo Greek chorus of the production,” Patterson explained. “I think she's a little challenging because she doesn't have a role or motivation within the storyline of Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat,” she said.

The Narrator doesn't portray a clear opinion about any of the action of the story.

“I believe her motivation is to clearly relay the background information necessary to set up most of the scenes so that the audience understands what is happening,” Patterson said.

“The show does not have any dialogue, quite like an opera, so I do think she's important in keeping the story moving along at a proper pace,” she noted.

Because the character is not a defined one, Patterson is enjoying the leeway that provides.

“I have wanted to do this show for a very long time. I could not pass up the opportunity to audition. The auditions and the show could not have happened at a better time for me,” she said.

The other two shows Sing Hosanna! has planned for its 40th year are the children and youth musical “Disney's Frozen Jr.” on June 26 and 27 and “Disney's Newsies” Nov. 8, 9 and 10.
