'Oz' performance truly wonderful
The Butler Summer Dramatics production of “Wizard of Oz” played to a very entertained preview audience last night in the Succop Theater at Butler County Community College.
From Kansas to Oz and back again, the talented cast capably transported the audience. Directed by Gordon Cavalero — with wonderful casting and creative choreography, costuming and sets — the show did not disappoint.
Jessica Ortiz shined in the role of Dorothy. Ortiz skillfully scaled back her big persona to convey Dorothy the meek. Her goal was to keep the role true to the classic Judy Garland version and she succeeded. Her chemistry with her co-stars was on point and that little cutie of a canine looked quite at home in her arms. Ortiz's vocals were strong and clear and, as always, quite pleasing.
Her trio of cohorts down the yellow brick road were a delight.
Derek Gieraltowski nailed the role of the Cowardly Lion from the fumbling and bumbling straight through to “If I Were King of the Forest.” He was silly yet stellar all at the same time.
Waylon O'Donnell showed the right stuff as the Scarecrow. His physical comedy, combined with his sweetness, was all things scarecrow. His crow buddies were really something to crow about, netting their fair share of chuckles during their short scene. The silly birds were portrayed by Zane Gagliardi, Colin Widdersheim and Reed Kruger.
As the Tin Man without a heart, Brecken Farrell melted a few with his tender performance. Kudos to being able to function in that costume.
The mean and green Wicked Witch of the West was played by Colleen O'Neil, who was downright nasty. The queen of mean mastered the sinister laugh and spewed forth her lines, compellingly dripping with spite.
Conversely, the lovely AnnMarie Lowerre was brilliant in her role as Glinda. She was sparkly and beautiful with an excellent voice. She added dimension to the character with a little attitude complementing the role with a bit of a twist.
Vinnie Lowerre offered up a commendable performance in his dual roles as Professor Marvel and the Wizard of Oz. Many other supporting roles combined to make the show a success.
Who doesn't love munchkins, and I'm not talking of the doughnut variety, but they were just as sweet. Clad in colorful costumes with clever choreography delivered the way only a slew of littles can, they were, in a word, adorable.
No doubt the glitches will be ironed out by opening night, making the show even more of a must-see.
