SR grad Thompson named PSAC MVPEDINBORO — Slippery Rock High School graduate and Slippery Rock University senior Ryan Thompson was named Overall Most Outstanding Athlete at the PSAC Indoor Track and Field Meet over the weekend.Thompson won the mile run by six seconds with a time of four minutes, 11 seconds. He placed third in the 3,000 meters in 8:33 and anchored SRU's distance medley relay to a second-place finish.The Rock tallied 141.5 points to finish second overall to seven-time PSAC champion Shippensburg (43 points).SRU's women placed third with 92 points, trailing Shippensburg (115) and Bloomsburg (111). Kennedy Evans won the 200 meters and anchored the winning 4x400 relay for The Rock.
Cubs boxer Wolfe loses in CubaPINAR DEL RIO, Cuba — Butler Cubs boxer Billy Wolfe, 16, of Worthington, lost by decision to Reinier Diaz in their 132-pound amateur boxing bout recently in Cuba.Wolfe was part of a contingent of young amateur boxers from the Pittsburgh area to face Cuban amateurs as part of the “Building Bridges Through Boxing” program.Wolfe took a standing-8 count during the fight, but went the distance.
SRU baseball splits opening weekendDINWIDDIE, Va. — The Slippery Rock University baseball team scored six runs in the ninth inning, but dropped a 13-9 decision to St. Thomas Aquinas Sunday in Virginia.The Rock finished 2-2 in a weekend set of games against East Stroudsburg, West Chester and St. Thomas Aquinas, all NCAA Tournament qualifiers a year ago.Ray Scala led SRU with two doubles and three RBI. Luke Fuscardo had three hits and two RBI, Christian Porterfield had a pair of hits.SRU plays Kutztown in Bel Air, Md., Saturday and Sunday.
Butler grad Gengler earns scholar awardEDINBORO — Butler graduate and Seton Hill sophomore Derek Gengler has been named the PSAC Men's Indoor Track and Field Champion Scholar.Gengler has amassed 48 credits toward his political science degree while boasting a 4.0 grade point average.
