SRU splits finale against Gannon

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University’s men’s and women’s basketball teams concluded the regular season Saturday against Gannon at Morrow Field House.

The Rock men (19-9, 16-5) dropped a 73-55 decision to the Golden Knights, but will return to action Wednesday night in the PSAC Tournament. SRU hosts the Seton Hill-Mercyhurst winner at 7 p.m.

SRU’s women (12-16, 9-12) defeated Gannon 71-67, but fell short of qualifying for the PSAC tourney.

The victory by Gannon’s men (11-17, 9-12) snapped The Rock’s 11-game winning streak at home. Rock All-American Micah Till missed his sixth straight game with a leg injury.

Nolen Gerald and Jared Armstrong scored 12 points for SRU while Julius Palmer added 10. Daryl Porter paced Gannon with 24 points and 13 rebounds.

SRU’s women were paced by Brooke Hinderliter with 23 points. She will enter her senior season ranked 12th in program history with 1,201 points.

Daeja Quick added 14 points, six rebounds and six assists for SRU. Ciara Patterson scored 13 points and had three steals in her final Rock game.

Patterson ranks sixth all-time for SRU women with 152 career 3-pointers.

Baseball

The Rock (2-3) split a doubleheader at West Virginia Wesleyan Saturday, losing the first game 3-2 in 10 innings and winning the nightcap, 9-2.

Butler graduate Wyatt Daugherty pitched three scoreless innings in the first game and has been unscored upon in five innings this season. Starting pitcher Chris Anastas received a no-decision and has struck out 16 batters in 11 innings on the year.

A six-run seventh paved the way to SRU’s second-game win. Frankie Jezioro had five hits in the twinbill, including a home run and double. Ray Scala had three singles and two RBI in the nightcap.

Tanner Stanz allowed five hits in six innings to get the win.
