The South Butler School District could see a $60,000 reduction in their state subsidy for scheduling fewer than 180 days of school for students before June 15.

The South Butler School District could see a $60,000 reduction in their state subsidy for scheduling fewer than 180 days of school for students before June 15.

District superintendent David Foley said the department did not count two Act 80 days held before teachers went on strike on March 15. Act 80 days normally count as instruction days although students have the day off.

Foley said the district plans to fight the fine.

The district also changed the calendar to give students and staff the day off on May 25 heading into the Memorial Day weekend and making the last day of school June 15.

Foley said commencement will be held on June 15, which is traditionally on the last day of school. Had the board chosen the other alternative of attending school on May 25, the last day of school would have been June 14 with commencement the next day.

Students will have early dismissal on June 14 and 15.

Teachers union President Ian Babb said the teachers agree with the new calendar.
