One injured in Route 8 crash

Emergency personnel respond to a crash on Route 8 in Butler Thursday.

One person was taken to the hospital with unspecified injuries Thursday afternoon, after she apparently fell asleep at the wheel on Route 8 north and hit an embankment before the vehicle flipped over at 3:30 p.m.

The identity of the driver, who bystanders said was a 19-year-old woman, wasn’t immediately released. She was trapped in the vehicle — a gray Ford Taurus — for more than 20 minutes as firefighters and EMS responders worked to remove the driver’s side door and remove her. She was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital by Butler Ambulance Service.

Traffic on the road’s northbound lanes was still at a standstill as of about 4:15 p.m., and the southbound traffic near the accident, which occurred across from the Farmers Insurance outlet along the road, was reduced to one lane.
