RAINED OUT: Severe thunderstorms knock out power

A flash flood stranded the driver of a white Nissan Maxima and his passenger along West Penn Street in Butler Tuesday afternoon. Butler police, fire and public works departments responded to the scene.

Rain and winds pelted areas around south Butler County on Tuesday afternoon, flooding several Butler city streets that even managed to immobilize a car on West Penn Avenue.

A Butler County dispatcher also said the office got a call reporting that lightning had struck a shed in Cranberry Township around 2:30 p.m.

The National Weather Service Pittsburgh issued a severe thunderstorm warning to local areas including Chicora, Saxonburg and East Butler at about 2 p.m. and lasting until 3 p.m. Tuesday.

A tweet from the service said the area could see winds of up to 60 miles per hour and possible hail the size of quarters during that time.

West Penn Power reported that more than 1,800 Butler County customers lost electricity during the storm, with a majority of about 1,600 being in Middlesex Township, and about 150 in Butler at about 3 p.m.

The Butler Eagle lost power at about 1:30 p.m. and didn't have it back until about 3:45 p.m.

The company estimated that power would be restored to a majority of customers about 5:30 p.m.
