Cubs hosting boxing show

Butler Cubs boxer Donovan Malovich, left, trains with coach Billy Wolfe in preparation for Saturday night's amateur boxing show at the Cubs Hall.

The Butler Cubs boxing program is hosting an amateur fight card Saturday at the Cubs Hall.

Bouts begin at 7:30 p.m.

Four Cubs fighters — Billy Wolfe III, Donovan Malovich, Lucas Adams and Sam Whalen — will compete in the show.

Wolfe, 11, is 10-6 and will face Brandon Ecrew of North Side Fitness in a 75-pound match. Malovich, 12, is 18-5 and will meet Quiinton Jackson of North Side Fitness in a 90-pound bout.

“Billy defeated Ecrew in a close fight in Kittanning,” Cubs boxing trainer Don Spinetti said. “We figured it'd be a pretty good rematch.

“Donavan has lost his last four fights, but he's involved in everything. He wrestled during the winter, runs track in the spring and plays Butler midget football in the fall.”

Wolfe's father, Billy Wolfe, also trains fighters in the Cubs boxing program and won an amateur national title himself at age 15.

Adams, 15, is 4-6 and will fight Andrew Staiger of Route 51 Boxing in Pittsburgh. Staiger plays quarterback for the Seton LaSalle High School football team and is the cather for the school's baseball team.

Whalen, 15, a Knoch High School student, will make his amateur debut at 145 pounds. His opponent is yet to be determined.

“Sam will be on the card. We're just looking for the right opponent for him,” Spinetti said. “He's debuting in his hometown and we want to be fair to him.”

There are 11 fights currently scheduled, including a pair of heavyweight bouts involving Corry Barnhart, 17, of Altoona against Mike Shook, 21, of Route 51 Boxing Club and Corey O'Connor, 16, of Altoona against Marcus Dementer, 16, of Akron, Ohio.

Tickets price is $12. All seats are general admission.

Butler Cubs boxer Bobby Osterrider was scheduled to be on the card, but suffered a hand injury recently and is unable to participate.
