Man charged with bank fraud

An arrest warrant has been issued for a North Carolina man who allegedly stole $50,000 from First Commonwealth Bank in Adams Township.

Adams Township Police have charged James A. Josey Jr., 56, of Statesville, N.C., with one count of felony theft and one count of misdemeanor for bad checks.

According to charging documents, an employee from the bank called police July 26 about the possible fraud.

“She reported that a longtime customer of theirs had committed numerous instances of bank fraud over a monthlong time period and had defrauded the bank in the amount of $20,806.

Police said Josey used the bank's mobile phone application to deposit checks into his account, which was tied to his business, Josey's Construction Services. According to the Better Business Bureau's listing, the business is headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., and opened in 2019.

“When the funds were made available, he would withdraw the funds,” police said. “The checks would then be returned, stamped 'insufficient funds,' leaving First Commonwealth Bank as the victim of the theft.”

Police said Josey and his company were located in the Butler County area, before Josey moved to North Carolina.

Police said Josey refused to answer calls from the bank, who then turned the case over to their internal security analysts.

Police said the analysts found there were 10 bad checks submitted under these same set of circumstances, accounting for about $51,700.

Police said the checks were submitted between May 21 and June 23.

According to the report, the checks were between two accounts for two different businesses under Josey's name. One being Josey's Construction Services and the other being Josey's.

The report also noted Josey then used more than $21,000 of that money before closing the two accounts.

Following his arrest, Josey will be arraigned and a preliminary hearing will be scheduled before District Judge Wayne Seibel.
