Butler Downtown plans awards for locals, businesses

Butler Downtown will recognize locals who have positively impacted the downtown region.

From 6 to 8 p.m. on Nov. 7, the public is invited to a free celebration that will include an annual award presentation for the Volunteer of the Year, Business of the Year and Economic Impact awards.

Matt McCune, president of Butler Downtown, said the event will have light refreshments and a time for socialization before they recognize award recipients for 2019.

“The purpose is to get folks who care about Main Street corridor, businesses and volunteers and people involved in various downtown events together to celebrate the area,” McCune said. “And just to have a fun night.”

McCune said the event also offers a chance to acknowledge the efforts of past and present board members and the organization's officers.

He said the main focus is on the award recipients, though.

The Business of the Year award will go to the Mystique Moon Antiques.

“They give local artists and artisans a place to sell their various products,” McCune said.

McCune said the business also did not give up on Downtown Butler despite losing its former location in the Worsley building, which was demolished following a fire in 2016.

“They could have gone somewhere else, but they decided to stick around on Main Street,” he said.

Jason Beckwith will receive the Volunteer of the Year award.

McCune said Beckwith has made a big impact on drug addition through his Action in Recovery group and has been active at many events downtown.

“I think that those (drug) issues are well-documented throughout the country, but specifically here.” McCune said. “(Action in Recovery) certainly has had a positive impact on those with addiction.”

Lastly, the Economic Impact award will go to the Spring Hill Suites Hotel.

McCune said having a hotel close to downtown allows Butler to better showcase itself.

“They have been instrumental in bringing people into the area. People staying in Butler for various reasons. They are staying in town and they are patronizing businesses around here.”
