Butler County's great daily newspaper

Neff was dedicated to game

As a writer, there are times I'm working on a story concerning a subject about which I already have a good deal of background information. Most of these involve local high school sports programs in football, basketball, soccer, etc., and individual athletes past and present.

I get a few interviews with appropriate coaches and players and I'm good to go.

Then there are stories that I need someone to give me a foundation of details so that I know what questions to ask in my future interviews.

An example was a recent story I wrote on the Butler County Horseshoe League. Prior to making any phone calls, I knew two things about the league: it has been around for a long time and the number of teams was down to three this summer.

I figured the best person to contact first was league statistician Mike Neff, who emailed results to the Butler Eagle on a weekly basis. I contacted him in mid-July and he spent 30 minutes on the phone with me. Afterward, I was confident I had enough knowledge to conduct additional interviews that would help me convey not only the league's current story, but also its draw — why members have been involved so long.

I was saddened to learn of Neff's death last week after a co-worker of mine mentioned his obituary. He died at his home last Monday at the age of 52.

I used just one quote from Neff in my story, but he provided me with valuable details that needed to be included. He also helped me get in contact with other league members, including his father, Butch, a longtime pitcher in the league.

Due to health issues, Mike Neff had not actually competed in the league for several years. But he remained involved because he loved being around the competition and camaraderie. He told me that he previously lived in California and competed in a horseshoe league out there.

Here at the Eagle, we appreciated Neff's time and effort in getting results to us. The Butler County Horseshoe League has been around since the 1950s and it deserves a presence in the newspaper every week. Thanks to Neff, we made that happen.

I briefly met Neff in late July when I showed up at a match at the Dew Drop Inn near Chicora to get a few interviews with my phone for a video to supplement the story in the newspaper. I left that day figuring I would again speak to him at some point, but was reminded last week that the next conversation with someone can never be guaranteed. It's a cruel lesson.

My sympathy goes out to Neff's family and friends. After the death of a loved one, memories seem to be small consolation. But whether they are sparked by a picture, a passing thought in one's mind or a ringer at a horseshoe match, they are the link to those we've lost.

Hold on tightly to them.

Rest in peace, Mike.
