Police say child porn suspect used library internet
Cyber crime investigators with the state police filed child pornography charges against a Clearfield Township man Monday.
Adam T. Groshong, 44, told police he viewed, downloaded and uploaded child pornography using his cell phone while connected to the Butler Area Public Library's internet, according to a police criminal complaint.
Groshong faces felony charges related to both disseminating and possessing child pornography, as well as criminal use of a communication facility, referring to the cell phone he used to collect the images.
Police began tracking Groshong through a July 19 report from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children by way of Google.
The tech giant provided information on Groshong through the center's CyberTipline.
Google flagged Groshong's use of his gmail account, a Google-made email service.
“Google reported 175 uploaded images and/or videos of (child pornography) which depict prepubescent males and females in the state of nudity exposing their genitals and some being sexually assaulted,” the police complaint states.
Police matched the IP address in Google's report to the library and confirmed with its administrators that Groshong has an account with the library with information matching the flagged gmail account.
Police obtained a search warrant and searched Groshong's house Dec. 19, but he was not there. In a voicemail to a state trooper, Groshong said he was at Roxbury Treatment Center. The center is an inpatient psychiatric and substance abuse facility in Shippensburg.
State police interviewed Groshong at the center, according to the complaint, during which Groshong admitted to the crime.
As of Monday, Groshong's case was slated “awaiting preliminary hearing,” but a date is not yet scheduled.
