Two water rescues underway in Butler County
Two simultaneous water rescues are ongoing in southern Butler County.
Heavy rains and swollen creeks have left residents stranded in at least a pair of homes in Jackson Township, according to emergency crews.
Butler County's Water Rescue Team 300 was called about 6:30 a.m. to County Lane where two people and two cats were stuck at a house on stilts by rising water on County Lane.
Rescuers initially tried getting there via Evergreen Mill Road but that road was closed at both ends due to flooding.
By 7 a.m., two boats were in the water trying to get to the home where “multiple people were trapped,” a county dispatcher said. The water are reportedly moving rapidly, too.
Crews were soon notified of another emergency: residents were stranded at a home on Willow Road where the yard and first floor were flooded.
Before those calls, rescuers had to help residents evacuate a home on Edinau Road.
“A neighbor called to report the house surrounded by water,” a dispatcher radioed. The caller advised that the family was inside, however, they were not seeking help.
But getting there proved not so easy for rescuers.
Crews found that Textor Hill Road was closed, which forced them to find an alternative route through Evans City.
The emergency was eventually cleared around 7 a.m. Everyone was safe.
Dispatchers, meanwhile, have been deluged this morning by calls for flooded basements and roads, and trees and wires down.
And situations in the county could get worse.
A hazardous weather outlook remains in effect for Butler County and all of western Pennsylvania.
The designation, issued by the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, means there is a potential for severe weather in the next several days — up to a week.
Southern Butler County is also under a flash flood warning until 8:15 a.m. today.
Zelienople appeared to have been possibly the hardest hit community. Streets in and around the downtown area were under water overnight. Mayor Thomas Oliverio Tuesday night issued a state of emergency for the borough.
“All residents are urged to stay indoors and avoid traveling on specified roads,” the emergency read.
Those roads are Main Street, East Beaver Street, West Beaver Street, Jefferson and Clay streets, Green Lane and West New Castle Street.
