CLINTON TWP — A crash on Saxonburg Boulevard Monday evening landed one woman in the hospital and left at least 200 township residents without power.

According to Gary Cooper, chief of the Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Co., a northbound car veered off the 900 block of Saxonburg Road, near the ESM II plant, at about 8:50 p.m., shearing off a utility pole.

The pole fell across both lanes of Saxonburg Boulevard, where it was struck by a southbound vehicle.

Cooper said the driver of the car that initially hit the pole was a woman who suffered serious injuries. She was taken by Saxonburg Ambulance to the Victory Road Industrial Park, where a medical helicopter took her to a Pittsburgh hospital.

A woman and child in the vehicle that struck the pole after it was downed suffered minor injuries, Cooper said.

No accident report was available this morning from state police, who responded to the crash, and the names of those involved were not released.

According to one resident of Saxonburg Boulevard, parts of the street were without electricity for almost 11 hours after the crash.

The bulk of those affected were Central Electric Cooperative customers.

“We had about 200 members affected in the Saxonburg Boulevard area,” said Chris O’Donnell, communication and marketing director for the utility.

“Most (had power) restored by 1:30 a.m. We had crews continuously working and everyone was restored by 6:15 a.m.”

Cooper said Saxonburg Boulevard was completely closed for about an hour after the crash, then reopened to one lane of traffic for the remainder of the night.

The road reopened completely by about 6 a.m. today.
