BUTLER TWP — Eric Christy was happy he didn't break his wrist.Moments later, his Butler football team broke General McLane's spirit.The Golden Tornado surrendered a 19-play touchdown drive that ate up the final eight minutes of the first half and put the Lancers ahead at the intermission. Butler responded with three touchdowns in the third quarter and went on to post a 40-20 victory Friday night at Art Bernardi Stadium.

ADAMS TWP — Emotions sometimes find a way to get the best of teams on homecoming.North Catholic found that out early Friday night as it overcame a 4-point halftime deficit to defeat East Allegheny, 31-14, at the Mars Athletic Complex in WPIAL Class 3A Allegheny Seven Conference action.“Sometimes as a head coach you can tell when the emotional part isn't there,” North Catholic coach Patrick O'Shea said.

CHERRY TWP — The ground game won over the air assault Friday night.The Moniteau football team (1-3) defeated Bradford (0-5) at home, 44-38, using its running game to produce 529 yards of offense.Running back Matt Martino led the team in total yards and had the longest run of the game, a 78-yard dash that led to a third-quarter touchdown a few plays later. The drive started after a Bradford punt pinned the Warriors on their own 2 yard line.

MANOR TWP — It's hard enough as it is to keep up with a well-oiled, high-flying attack.To do it when you keep shooting yourself in the foot, though, is downright impossible. That was the case in Knoch's visit to Kittanning Friday evening, resulting in a 49-6 loss to Armstrong.Knoch fell to 0-2 in conference play and 1-4 overall. Armstrong improved to 1-1, 3-2.

BUFFALO TWP — Freeport head football coach John Gaillot will never be satisfied with a loss, but he can certainly take positives from a defeat.That optimism was focused on his defense Friday night.Facing a Serra Catholic team armed with a potent offense and averaging nearly 38 points per game, Gaillot watched his defense frustrate the Eagles for much of the night.The undefeated Eagles (5-0) entered the game averaging nearly 330 yards of offense per contest, but were held to 251.

PLUM — Another listless offensive performance by the Mars football team Friday night at Plum Stadium made Planets coach Scott Heinauer stress a sense of urgency.Mars can't afford to play from behind.Plum built a 12-point halftime lead and never let the Planets get close in a 29-0 Greater Allegheny Conference win. It was the second time this season Mars, which fell to 0-5 for the first time since 2003, has been shut out.
