Harrisville residents warned of solicitors

HARRISVILLE — Word has spread through the borough about a pair of solicitors reportedly acting strangely.

Council President April Anschutz, who served her last day Tuesday, said the borough was initially notified by resident Brian Hogue.

Anschutz posted a status through the borough's Facebook page to warn other residents about a pair of men seeking utility information from residents.

State police were notified about the incident, which other residents corroborated with their own accounts in the comments section of the post.

Many who encountered the solicitors claimed they acted unprofessionally or made them uncomfortable.

Hogue later posted a description of the two men. He said they were two white men in their mid-to-late 20s. He said both had short dark hair, and one man was about 5 foot, 10 inches while the other was 5 foot, 6 inches and wore glasses.

“Both were wearing blue jackets and blue ball caps,” Hogue said in a Facebook comment.

Anschutz said the borough has a procedure in place for traveling salespeople visiting the borough.

She said she checked with borough staff to see if a solicitation permit had been issued for that day.

“We haven't had one since September, so they clearly did not have one,” Anschutz said.

Those wanting to sell in the borough are required to obtain a solicitation permit. The cost of the permit is $5 per day or $50 per month.

Anyone going door-to-door without a permit is breaking the borough's law.

“The permit states that we do allow them to solicit within the borough limits,” Anschutz said.

Anschutz said anyone who encounters these people should call state police.
