Injured police officer can apply for state funding

Butler City Council approved a motion to allow the patrol officer who was stabbed and fatally shot his assailant Tuesday to apply for provisions that will help pay for medical expenses.

Officer Michael Sulerud will be able to apply for the provisions due to workplace-related injuries sustained during the Aug. 24 incident after council passed the motion at its Thursday meeting.

The Pennsylvania Heart and Lung Act provides for wage and medical benefits for police officers and paid firefighters who are temporarily disabled due to an injury in the line of duty, according to the Government Finance Officers Association's website.

Sulerud was injured in an incident when responding to a call early Tuesday morning on West Jefferson Street, where he was stabbed multiple times before shooting the assailant, John Ebberts of Butler. His injuries require surgical treatment.

Mayor Ben Smith said the program is a form of workman's compensation that keeps officers funded when injured.

The council will normally receive two or three requests for this per year.

The council also awarded a bid to S & C Trucking & Excavating for the clearing of Sullivan Run for $11,500. This will be the second project the city is taking on involving Sullivan Run, and it will take approximately two to three weeks to complete.

The city received three bids to clear the stream, and it is a project the city undertakes semi-regularly.
