Butler girls get victory No. 1

Tornado defeat Lincoln Park, 65-34

Butler’s girls basketball team was fast out of the gate, scoring 21 first-quarter points en route to a 65-34 victory over Lincoln Park in the first round of the Sto-Rox Holiday Tournament on Monday.

The win was the first of the season for the Golden Tornado (1-7).

“We always talk in practice about the little things you need to do,” said first-year Butler coach Joe Lewandowski. “We came out and executed better tonight than we had at any point in the season. We keep telling the girls that as hard as we practice, good things will happen. It’s great any time you can get a win.”

Kailey Olenick scored 15 points and Jenna Kunst added 11 for Butler, which shot 26-of-50 from the floor.

The Golden Tornado tallied 15 steals and held Lincoln Park to single digits in points in three of four quarters.

“It was a really good team effort,” said Lewandowski. “We played incredibly hard on defense.”

Butler will face Westinghouse at 6:30 p.m. today at the Sto-Rox Tournament.
