No one was injured in an apparent accidental fire this morning at a home on the 500 block of Carbon Street in Butler, authorities said.

Robert Glenn was home but the smell of smoke and working smoking detectors alerted him shortly before 11 a.m. to the fire in the living room of the 2½-story house, said Butler Fire Lt. Donald McCoy.

“The fire is undetermined at this time and remains under investigation,” he said. It appeared it started in or around the couch, where Glenn had been smoking a cigarette.

Glenn told fire officials that he extinguished the cigarette and went into the kitchen to make lunch. A short time later, the fire started.

“He saw the fire in the couch area,” McCoy said. “He got a fire extinguisher and tried to put it out but couldn’t. That’s when he came out.”
