It's Showtime

Kelly Werner of Butler, a Slippery Rock University art major, works on a piece she will exhibit in her senior show May 6-10. Spring is the time for students of the arts at SRU to perform or present their senior recitals.
Season starts for SRU art, dance and music recitals

SLIPPERY ROCK — This spring, more than 50 Slippery Rock University music, dance and art students will present senior recitals, featuring instrument and vocal performances, dance choreography and art exhibits in painting, stoneware and digital media.

Music students will perform between April 15 and May 4.

More than 20 dance students will present their work at Dance Senior Synthesis Concerts on April 20 and 21. Admission to these concerts is $7 for general admission and $5 for students, senior citizens and children.

The art shows and music performances have no admission cost.

Art students will set up solo exhibits from April 29 to May 4, May 6 to 10 and May 13 to 15.

“The show is exciting for me because it holds a lot of relevance in my life, but also because senior shows for art majors serve as a means for launching you into your future endeavors, whether that's grad school, a job or working as a fine artist,” said Kelly Werner, an art major from Butler.

Werner, a ceramist, will exhibit her work May 6 to 10 in SRU's Martha Gault Art Gallery.

“At the moment I've been pretty immersed in my ceramic artwork for my senior show,” Werner said. “I am exploring the relationships between humans manipulating their environment, and ceramics is a great medium to work in for this concept; the artist manipulates the work in a related fashion.

“Working in clay allows me to feel a connection to the Earth, both literally and metaphorically speaking. I am hopeful that my show allows its viewers to raise questions about the environment that they inhabit and consider our momentum moving forward when we create sustainable initiatives.”
