VALENCIA — Police arrested a borough man Friday after he allegedly assaulted a woman at their residence, reportedly throwing her to the ground and choking her to the point she couldn't breathe.

Officers were called around 1 a.m. and arrived on the scene to find the suspect, Zachary Jude Magiske, 28, of Valencia, “highly intoxicated,” with “a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath,” documents state.

Police interviewed the woman, who said Magiske assaulted her during an argument after she asked for a cigarette.

The woman alleged that Magiske grabbed her by the throat and threw her onto the yard. She said he continued to squeeze her throat until she couldn't breathe and felt like she was going to pass out, documents state.

Officers reported observing injuries to the woman's neck.

Magiske is charged with strangulation, assault and harassment. He was released on a $50,000 unsecured bond.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled April 9.
