Tractor-trailer accident closes I-79 lane for hours

A jackknifed tractor-trailer closed Interstate 79 northbound Monday. Authorities at the scene told dispatchers the driver was uninjured in the crash, but there was fuel leaking from the vehicle.

A jackknifed tractor trailer closed down traffic on Interstate 79 on Monday.

Around 9:27 a.m., Butler County 911 dispatched multiple fire departments to help close down the northbound lane of I-79, between the Route 422 to Route 108 interchanges.

Portersville-Muddycreek Fire Capt. Matt Harrison said the driver, who was alone in the cab, was uninjured in the crash. He said there appeared to be damage to a guardrail nearby, and the tractor had folded into itself.

“The tractor trailer remained upright on its wheels, and it remained completely on the roadway, which made it considerably easier (to remove),” Harrison said.

Harrison said he believed the trailer was empty, but the truck was leaking fuel onto the ground. He said his crew worked to place a hazmat pool underneath the hole from where the fuel was escaping. Then, the wrecker picking up the broken-down truck pumped the fuel from the pool and into barrels.

“We were able to capture, and they were able to salvage, approximately 75 gallons of fuel,” Harrison said.

While firefighters worked at the scene, Slippery Rock and Prospect fire departments helped block traffic from lining up behind the crash. Traffic in the northbound lane was redirected off I-79 at the Route 422 interchange.

The northbound lane was closed from the Route 422 interchange to the Route 108 interchange.

All departments left the scene and reopened the road around 1:32 p.m.

State police were on the scene investigating the crash.
