PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates signed outfielder Shalin Polanco as a non-drafted free agent Friday.

The 16-year-old Polanco, who is from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, is currently rated as the eighth-best international draft prospect according to Baseball America. He was also rated by MLBPipeline as the third-best outfielder in the 2020-21 international draft class.

“We are excited to add Shalin to the Pirates organization,” Pirates general manager Ben Cherington said. “He’s an athletic outfielder and promising left-handed hitter with power potential.”

The Pirates signed a total of 15 players during the first day of the 2020-21 international signing period.

NEW WILMINGTON — Freeport native Morgan Carmelo, Karns City graduate Matt Slagle and Knoch product Abbey Gore have been named to the all-decade cross country teams at Westminster College.

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh suspended freshman forward John Hugley indefinitely for disciplinary reasons on Friday following his arrest on felony charges stemming from an incident last summer.

Hugley, who is from Cleveland, Ohio, is facing two counts of felony criminal conspiracy and one felony count of receiving stolen property, according to a criminal complaint filed Thursday.

A preliminary hearing is set for Feb. 18.

The complaint alleges Hugley was one of two men who entered a car without permission in the early hours of July 19 while the person responsible for the vehicle was sleeping. The car was reported stolen later in the day before being recovered on Aug. 4.

Broncos Miller under investigation

DENVER — Broncos linebacker Von Miller is under investigation by police in a Denver suburb.

Parker Police Department spokesman Josh Hans confirmed the investigation Friday, but couldn’t provide additional details. Hans wrote in an email that, “if the investigation determines a crime has occurred, charges will be submitted to the DA’s Office for their review.”

The Broncos released a statement saying they were “aware of an investigation involving Von Miller and are in the process of gathering more information.”

Miller missed the 2020 season with an ankle injury he suffered just before the opener.
