Elderly couple scammed by distraction theft
BUTLER TWP — Police are seeking a pair of distraction thieves who stole a large amount of money from an elderly couple’s home Tuesday afternoon. But investigators admit they have little to go on in. And they have no suspects.
The victims, who live on Seneca Drive, were unable to provide Butler Township police with a good description of the thieves, both white men. They told investigators that the younger of the suspects was missing his front teeth and the crooks were last seen driving a red, newer model Jeep Liberty or Patriot.
Police said the suspects made an unsolicited stop at the victims’ home, falsely claiming to be employees of a local roofing company. “They pointed out the (roof) was missing a shingle and the flashing appeared to be bad,” said police Lt. Matthew Pearson.
Once inside, one of the suspects kept the couple distracted, talking to them at their kitchen table, while the other suspect went into another room under the pretense of checking for leaks in the ceiling. While away from the victims, the man stole money that was “concealed within the other room,” Pearson said.He would not elaborate. He also declined to say how much money was taken.
Pearson said police are checking with other departments to determine if the suspects they’re looking for have committed similar crimes. He reminded residents not to allow anyone they do not know into their homes.
