SV grad Mazzoni back in majors
It's been a long road back to the majors for Seneca Valley graduate and Evans City native Cory Mazzoni.
The 27-year-old right-handed pitcher tore his labrum and underwent surgery in April of last season.
After more than a year of rehab, Mazzoni started a minor league rehab assignment this summer and then advanced again to the San Diego Padres' Triple-A affiliate in El Paso, where he posted a 0.89 ERA and 31 strikeouts to only three walks in 20 1/3 innings.
Tuesday, with Padres relief pitcher Carter Capps placed on the 60-day disabled list, a spot on the 40-man roster opened up and Mazzoni took it.
Mazzoni's contract was selected and he was set to join the team in Minnesota.
Mazzoni pitched 8 1/3 innings with the Padres in 2015 and didn't fare well, posting a 20.77 ERA.
Mazzoni pitched in Tuesday night's Padres' loss to Minnesota, tossing 1.1 innings, allowing four hits, two homers and four runs. He had one strikeout.
