Nature plays trick on Halloween

Seven Butler County municipalities changed trick-or-treat times to avoid expected poor weather.

As of Wednesday evening, Pittsburgh's National Weather Service predicted a 100 percent chance of rain Thursday through the evening hours. Meteorologist Jared Rackley said they're fairly certain Halloween is going to be wet.

“It doesn't really start to go away until 9 or 10 o'clock, after everyone is back inside,” Rackley said.

Winds are expected to pick up right around when trick-or-treating begins. Gusts in the early evening hours are expected to be around 25 mph, and then up to 30 or 35 mph later in the evening.

The rain arrives as a low pressure system moves in from the Midwest, Rackley said. After Thursday, the system will bring with it a cold front that looks to drop Friday temperatures into the 40s.

Despite the rain and wind, Thursday will still be warm for the average Halloween, Rackley said.

“At least it'll be warm,” he said. “I guess that's the one positive thing. A warm rain is better than a cold rain.”

The seven municipalities moving trick-or-treat are Saxonburg, Seven Fields, East Butler, Evans City, Fairview Borough, Marion Township and Forward Township.

Those seven moved to either Friday or Saturday. Both days will be rain-free, Rackley said, but cold.

“Friday is going to be pretty chilly in the evening,” he said. “Even by 5 (p.m.), we're looking at temperatures in the lower 40s. Saturday evening will be a little bit warmer, but like mid-40s. Not a whole lot warmer.”

The Butler Eagle attempted to contact every municipality in the county for information. Many offices reported receiving an inundation of calls about moving trick or treat to avoid the weather, although the vast majority opted to brave the rain and maintain Halloween's traditional date.

The following municipalities postponed their trick-or-treat times to avoid poor weather:- Saxonburg rescheduled to 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.- Seven Fields rescheduled to 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday.- East Butler rescheduled to 6 to 7 p.m. Friday.- Evans City rescheduled to 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday.- Fairview Borough rescheduled to 6 to 7 p.m. Friday.- Marion Township rescheduled to 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday.- Forward Township rescheduled to 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday.
