15-year resident picked to fill council position

SR seat was open until end of year

SLIPPERY ROCK — Borough council filled its vacant seat through the end of the year during a meeting this week.

“I just want an opportunity to serve the community,” said Jeff Campbell, the new appointee. “I see it as a probationary period, a feeling-out period, for both of us.”

Campbell, a 15-year resident of the borough, said he sees the next couple of months as a good opportunity to showcase his experience and test the water on council.

Councilman Mike Sullivan stepped away from the seat in August because he planned to relocate.

Sullivan took over the position in March after Councilman Itzi Meztli vacated the seat in February due to health concerns.

The position ends Dec. 31, when the council member selected in the Nov. 5 election will take office.

Campbell said he brings experience in local government, serving on the borough's planning commission and having served on a board in another county.

“I previously lived in Rimersburg, and I served on town council over there for three terms,” he said.

He said the planning commission position gives him “an ability to be a liaison between planning commission and the council.”

Campbell said he has experience in construction and business. He is director of facilities and operations for Moniteau School District and has more than 20 years of experience in that capacity.

“I know they have some projects going on and are preparing a budget,” Campbell said. “There's a lot of good ideas and things being brought forward.”

There were four applicants for the temporary seat, including November-election front-runner Lauren Christmann.

Christmann is running uncontested in the race for the two-year seat and was the top vote-getter in the primary in the four-year seat category. Four council members will be elected in November.

Christmann is joined by on the ballot by incumbents Royce Lorentz, Ronald Steele and Denton Zeronas.
