Butler's Memorial Park getting new security cameras

Butler City Council voted Thursday to purchase security cameras for $5,985 to be placed in Memorial Park.

Father Marinaro Park is already outfitted with cameras from the same company, Secure Technical Solutions, which Councilman Jeff Smith said have changed that park for the better. Previously, people have been found dumping garbage there, he said.

“These cameras will cover a big part of the park,” he said. “I'm not sure I would have bought into the deterrent value until I saw what's happened at Father Marinaro.”

The purchase is coming from next year's park maintenance budget, according to Jeff Smith.

Bureau of Police Chief Robert O'Neill said the cameras will be wired into the police station, and are helpful in deterring harm, as Father Marinaro Park has proven.

“We're always for cameras,” O'Neill said.

In other business, council appointed Nicolas Landon to the city's planning and zoning commission in a 3-2 vote.

Mayor Ben Smith said Landon had expressed an interest in joining the commission, and he wanted to bring new ideas to the group, rather than reappoint the same people.

“I like giving new people a shot,” he said. “These are not lifetime appointments, and just because somebody wants to stay on doesn't mean they should stay on indefinitely.”
