Butler City Council will consider applying for a state grant for a streetscape project that would include moving Main Street utility lines underground.

Council briefly discussed applying to the Department of Community and Economic Development for a Multimodal Transportation Fund grant and the streetscape project at Tuesday's forum meeting.

Mayor Ben Smith said the amount of money the city would apply for hasn't been finalized, but it will be on the agenda for Thursday's voting meeting.

The project would involve moving overhead utility lines underground, new street lighting and planting trees on Main Street between Wayne and Penn streets, he said.

The grant requires a local match, which would be a combination of streetlight tax proceeds and the $1.015 million loan for 50 new streetlights the city is seeking from the county infrastructure bank, he said.

County commissioners' staff took the lead role in completing the grant application, which is due July 31, he said.
