SLIPPERY ROCK — Borough council made official moves on two cooperative agreements, including the use of police services, with Slippery Rock Township at Tuesday's meeting.

Council approved its end of an agreement that would allow the borough and township to share public works resources, equipment and personnel.

Councilman Russell Karl said the police agreement gives borough officers further protection and a set hourly rate of $60 per hour for their use at township calls.

Solicitor Rebecca Black said the agreement also notes the borough officers are called to the township only by request of Butler County 911 Emergency Services or the Pennsylvania State Police.

The public works agreement goes into effect immediately because the township was the first to accept the terms.

The police services agreement will go into effect when the township approves the agreement.

“The township surrounds the borough, and I think it's good to support each other to the betterment of our communities,” Karl said.

Councilman Gene Allison said these types of agreements exist in other places, and they work.

“We scratch their back, and they scratch ours. It works,” he said.

“There's no reason not to work together.”

Council also accepted the resignation of council member Mike Sullivan, who was absent at Tuesday's meeting. “Mike is moving and is relocating his family out of state,” Karl said.

Sullivan took over the position in March after council member Itzi Meztli vacated the seat in February due to health concerns.

The position ends on Dec. 31. An election for the seat will be held in November.

Allison said council will advertise the opening of the position. Candidates have 30 days to apply.

“They can turn it in early if they wish,” Allison said. “We're accepting applications at any time.”
