'Life Chain' forms in Butler
About 50 people lined parts of Butler's Main Street on Sunday in hopes of bringing attention to the issue of abortion.
“This is Butler's Life Chain, a peaceful protest for the unborn child,” said organizer Isaac Bruce, of Butler.
The Life Chain is a nationwide campaign to raise awareness about respecting life.
Beginning about 1 p.m., those taking part in the event held signs showing their stance to motorists traveling along the street. They stood on the curbs on both sides of Main Street, Diamond Park on one side and the county courthouse on the other. They did not interact with passing vehicles.
“Pray to end Abortion,” one sign read.
“Adoption is a loving option,” another stated.
Tom Patterson, chairman of the Butler Chapter of Pennsylvanians for Human Life, said he and some of his group came to support the Life Chain.
“It's important to remember that life issues matter,” Patterson said. “We're here to give witness to the issue and pray for the unborn.”
Joining Patterson at the protest was his daughter, Danielle, a sophomore at Butler High School.
She said this was the first protest she had taken part in, but she felt strongly about the topic.
Danielle said she felt good about being a part of the protest, even if a few people in passing cars shouted negative things. Her father told her that will happen when confronting people with opposing opinions.
She said despite those attitudes, she made her voice heard.
“It felt good,” she said.
The protesters stepped away from the curb around 2 p.m. breaking into smaller groups before leaving.
