GetGo plan advances in Adams Township

A GetGo gas station and convenience store is planned at the corner of Route 228 and Warrendale Road in Adams Township. Developers hope to have the project completed by fall of 2019.
Site plan OK'd by supervisors

ADAMS TWP — Plans to open a GetGo gas station on Route 228 took significant steps forward Monday, with township supervisors approving a site plan as well as a motion to officially vacate a portion of Boggs Avenue, which had been left unused for more than 20 years.

The GetGo would be at the intersection of Route 228 and Warrendale Road, at the southwest corner of the intersection. Developers hope to have the project completed by fall of 2019.

GetGo is a subsidiary of Giant Eagle.

Monday's board meeting began with a hearing on the vote to vacate the portion of Boggs Avenue with discussion centering on whether the township must vote to abandon the road, as it has been left vacant for so long.

Adams Manager Gary Peaco said township officials thought it would be best to get it down in writing for clarity's sake.

“We have a lot of paper streets. A lot of towns have paper streets. Some are not even open, some are driveways. It's just the township never took it over,” he said. “It (voting to vacate) makes it cleaner.”

Supervisors closed the hearing and voted to approve the motion to vacate the road.

The board also voted to approve the GetGo site plan.

The plan includes sidewalks along Warrendale Road, a right-in-right-out entrance on Route 228 and two entrances on Warrendale Road.

Supervisor Russ Ford asked whether developers had obtained required PennDOT approval to put an entrance on Route 228.

Giant Eagle representatives said they anticipate approval once grading work is done on Route 228, which will improve sightlines and drivability.

“Because right now that's a terrible spot,” Ford said. “With the grading I think it'll be much better.”

He also asked about sidewalks, and Giant Eagle representatives said PennDOT planned to install sidewalks on Warrendale Road.

Developers addressed concerns about potential sound and light problems, saying the sound should not be greater than that already coming off Route 228 and that the lights that they plan to install fall well within township ordinances regarding light pollution.

The board approved the site plan with a request that the company continue to work with neighbors and to take their concerns into consideration.

Peaco said later that the developers will continue to work with PennDOT and other agencies to acquire necessary permissions.

“They have some DEP permits they need to get through. Once they do that, they can do grading,” said Peaco. “Obviously it's a tight area to work with, but they're trying to coordinate as much as possible.”

He said PennDOT hopes to be done by fall of 2019 and Giant Eagle hopes to be open by then.

In the meantime, Peaco said, he expects the township to continue talks with PennDOT and Giant Eagle to prevent any problems and best coordinate efforts.
