Mr. Pflugh’s Favorite Butler County historical sites

Knoch High School history teacher Bradley Pflugh considers the Old Stone House in Slippery Rock to be his favorite site in Butler County history.

“It’s based on the original house that was there in the 1800s, a stagecoach stop. I helped run that house as part of my master thesis, and it’s a big part of my second book,” Pflugh said.

“Rage, Murder and Execution! The Story of Sam Mohawk and the Wigton Family Massacre” recounts the story of a Native American of the Seneca tribe who killed the Wigton family, a mother, her four daughters and infant son a mile from the Old Stone House.

“He stopped (at the Old Stone House),” Pflugh said. “Mohawk was the first man hung here, one of the few guys hanged in the county.”

When it comes to field trips, Pflugh said his favorite place to take students is the battlefield at Antietam, Md.

“It doesn’t have the popularity of Gettsyburg,” he said.
