Car shears off pole, knocks out power

BRADY TWP — A Mercer County woman was hurt Tuesday morning when the car she was driving struck and sheared off a utility pole along Route 528, state police said.

The crash shortly before 11 a.m. closed the road for an hour or so between West Liberty and Staff roads in the township and knocked out power to a number of homes.

Margaret McCormick, 84, of Jamestown told police that she was southbound on Route 528, also known as Prospect Road, when she momentarily looked away and drifted off the road, said Trooper Philip Treadway. Police suspect speed also was a factor.

Her Toyota Corolla hit the pole, snapping it and sending a guide wire across the road.

McCormick, who was wearing a seat belt, was able to get out of the car on her own. She suffered only minor injuries. Her car's air bags deployed.

The car sustained severe damage and had to be towed. A family member arrived later for McCormick.

Unionville volunteer firefighters assisted with traffic control and waited for a Central Electric Cooperative crew to arrive and replace the pole.

The number of total power outages caused by the wreck was not immediately available but as of 4:20 p.m., Central Electric Cooperative officials said, 105 members were still without service.

Police said McCormick faces a ticket for disregarding traffic lanes.
