CONCORD TWP — A 44-year-old West Sunbury man was killed —apparently this morning — when a car he was driving crashed into a culvert and flipped over along Route 38, state police said.

The man's wrecked Ford Escort was found about 5:40 a.m. by a passer-by, but police don't know when the crash happened.

The car's windows were frosted over by frigid temperatures, indicating the wreckage was not immediately discovered, police said.

Investigators speculated the crash could have occurred "several hours" before the passing motorist came upon it.

Authorities delayed releasing the man's name until his family was notified.

The man, who was dressed in work clothes, was driving south on Route 38 when he lost control of his car, possibly after hitting a deer, police said.

A deer carcass was found on the road about 50 yards south of the crash.

Police also noted that road conditions were not a factor.

The car went off the road and down an embankment, hitting a concrete wall with its front end. The car ended on its roof.

The vehicle's air bag deployed but police did not immediately know if the man was wearing a seat belt.

Butler County Coroner William Young III pronounced the man dead at the scene of head and chest injuries.
