ADAMS TWP — Three motorists are hailed as heroes for rescuing a driver this morning who was trapped and on fire in a pickup truck after a crash on Route 228.

The unidentified man suffered burns to 90 percent of his body, according to Assistant Chief Al Minjock of the Adams Area Fire District. The man also had facial fractures and other injuries.

A medical helicopter flew the man to Allegheny General Hospital.

"He was conscious and talking to us before he was transported," said Adams Township police chief Bill Westerman. "He was screaming and obviously in a lot of pain."

The man was in a westbound Ford pick-up at 7:04 a.m. when an eastbound F-150 apparently crossed the center line, causing the collision, police said.

Neither truck driver's name has been released. However, the eastbound truck was from Brayman Construction of Saxonburg.

A white Hyundai Sonata headed west was unable to stop in time and hit the Ford pickup. The force of the collision trapped the pickup driver's legs under the dash.

Dave Minor, a truck driver with D&D Auto Salvage of Saxonburg, was on his way to Beaver Falls when he happened on the crash.

Minor, 50, of Creighton, Allegheny County, said he crested the hill near the intersection with Inverness Boulevard about 1.5 miles west of Mars High School.

"Everyone was hollering for a fire extinguisher," he said. He pulled one from his truck and ran to the burning truck.

Minor and at least two other men are credited with pulling the driver from the truck.

"I just helped a little," Minor said. "I had to walk away. I was folding under the pressure."

Minjock praised all three men who stopped to help.

"Those are what you call heroic bystanders," Minjock said of the rescuers.

At least two other motorists also brought extinguishers to the fire.

Meanwhile, Minjock hailed the men: "It's a testament to those people that they stop and they tried to help. They saved that guy. No question."

But Minor, still shaken from what he saw, downplayed his contribution.

"I didn't do all that much, really," he said. "Those firefighters... I don't know how they deal with it. I couldn't even look at it."
