SLIPPERY ROCK — A backyard rivalry turned into a backyard rout.Slippery Rock ambushed Grove City, scoring two touchdowns before the Eagles' potent offense took the field, and the Rockets ran away with a 34-7 Region 3 football victory at Troy-Alan Stadium Friday night.“Grove City scored on their first possession in each of their first three games,” said Slippery Rock coach Larry Wendereusz. “So for us to go up 14-0 before they touched the ball, that was big.”The Rockets (1-0, 3-0) took the opening kickoff and used seven plays to drive to Grove City's 37, where they faced a 4th-and-7.

JACKSON TWP —Alex Paulsen's toughest battle as he followed the punt he blocked 20 yards downfield before putting his arms out to catch it Friday night at NexTier Stadium may have been his anxiety.The Seneca Valley senior nose tackle was prepared for the worst.“I was like, 'Oh, God. I'm not going to catch it',” Paulsen said. “'Don't drop it, don't drop it, don't drop it.' Then it landed in my hands and I was like 'I have to go for the touchdown.'Paulsen's first career touchdown — at any level — was part of a 27-point outburst in the second quarter that helped the Raiders squash Hempfield 49-0 in their Quad County Conference opener.

NEW KENSINGTON — Much like a sports car defrosting in winter weather, North Catholic's offense needed only to warm up Friday evening. After a sluggish pair of drives to open their road matchup with Valley, sophomore quarterback Jason Siket and the Trojans found their groove and trounced the Vikings, 49-0.

JEFFERSON TWP — With an offense full of weapons, at least one star is bound to shine.That star was Greensburg Salem running back Rashad Canady, who rushed for 99 yards and three touchdowns as the Golden Lions defeated Knoch, 34-13, in WPIAL 4A Greater Allegheny action Friday night.“He (Canady) run the ball tonight like he has done for us in the past,” Greensburg Salem coach Dave Keefer said. “Rashad runs with the ball downhill and that's what we wanted him to do. He's going to be a big part of what we do moving forward.”

ADAMS TWP — Some might say that half of a loaf is better than none.But not Mars football coach Scott Heinauer.His Planets played undefeated Highlands tough for one half, but ended up falling to the Golden Rams, 22-7, Friday night in the Greater Allegheny Conference opener for both teams at the Mars Athletic Complex.“In the first half, we showed promise,” he said of his Mars team, which fell to 0-4 with the loss. “But there are two halves in a game. We talked about that at halftime. But (the Golden Rams) came out and played a better second half than us.
