JACKSON TWP — Lane restrictions on I-79 are still in effect as of Wednesday afternoon after an excavator and a truck bearing an oversized load collided with the I-79 overpass over Route 68 Tuesday morning.

Road crews closed the driving lane on I-79 north and the passing lane on I-79 south between mile marker 86 and 88 Tuesday after the collisions, and restricted traffic on Route 68 to a single alternating lane.

All lanes are now open on Route 68 under the overpass.

Emergency crews responded to the initial accident on Route 68 Tuesday morning, after an excavator collided with the I-79 overpass at around 10 a.m.

Crews temporarily closed Route 68 for clean up. While they worked to clear that scene, an oversized load also struck the I-79 overpass, becoming wedged underneath according to Harmony Fire District officials.

PennDOT inspectors arrived on the scene Tuesday to inspect the bridges for any damage. As of 3 p.m. Wednesday officials had yet to receive the inspector's report.

It is unknown how long the lane restrictions will remain and will depend on the inspectors' findings laid out in their report.
